Vernon J. Smith, 93, of Willard passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky following a brief illness.
He was born September 21, 1926 in Monroeville to Warren and Emma (Long) Smith.
Vernon was a 1944 graduate of Bellevue High School. He was a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Norwalk and the North Fairfield American Legion. He retired after thirty plus years of service from the Ford Motor Company.
Vernon served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He enjoyed woodworking and reading.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Joanne E. (Schild) Smith; three children, Larry E. Smith of Willard, Sharon J. (Kenneth) Didion of Westlake, and David V. Smith of Bellevue; one daughter-in-law, Cathy Smith of Michigan; six grandchildren, Dennis (Rosalie) Smith, Colleen King, Jodi Smith, Craig (Stephanie) Didion, Eric (Sarah) Smith, and Wayne Smith; seven great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Smith, Kyle Smith, Rosa King, Olivia Didion, Hannah Didion, Seth Smith, and Shelby Smith; one great-great grandchild, Sawyer Smith; one brother, Donald (Barb) Smith of Monroeville, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Smith; his parents, and five siblings.
Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Sunday, September 29, 2019 in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, September 30, 2019 in St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, 243 Benedict Avenue, Norwalk. Pastor Ann Marshall will officiate. Private family committal service will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Pontiac.
