Joan Carol (Berry) Tigges, of Milan, Ohio, passed away at home Sunday, December 08, 2019 following a long courageous battle with numerous types of cancer which began when she was 14 years old. She, as her grandfather Joseph O. Berry, was "strong like bull."
Joan was born in Marquette, Michigan on September 07, 1946, to Joseph H. and Elizabeth L. (Quilliam) Berry, and graduated from Bishop Baraga High School, Class of 1964.
Joan was one of the first women to leave her small South Marquette Community, entering Ferris State to earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She retired from the pharmaceutical field in 2004 to help care for her first grandson. She was a member of St. Anthony's of Milan.
Joan was a devoted wife to husband, George; a supportive, loyal mother to daughter, Angela Jeanne Byington; a loving, a true "big" sister to siblings, Joe, Dave and Colleen; a fun-loving aunt, to Maggie, Kevin, Kali and David and protector of grandkids, Clay and Jorja Byington, who were the center of her world.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Fredrick Tigges II; her parents, Joe and Betty; twin sons, George Scott and Jason Joseph, and her brother, Joseph W. Berry.
Joan didn't like to cook, she didn't like to clean, but she was a heck of a designated driver always there for her daughter and friends whenever they called. She was a master knitter and crocheter, creating cuddly afghans and socks for all in need. While she loved watching all sports, boxing and Cesar Chavez were her favorite. John Elway stole her heart when it came to watching football.
Joan was considered a "beacon of hope" for many, her guiding light shining a path of strength and endurance whenever she visited.
Friends may call on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at 10:00 am until the time of the service of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 145 Center St., Milan. Father Francis Mariadas will officiate. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, 2602 Bogart Rd., Huron. A celebration of her life will be held following burial at the Milan Wine Post, 1 N. Main St., Milan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Joan's name are requested to be made to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Euclid Ave. Cleveland, Ohio 44106.
