Verlene Wood, 71, of Sandusky, passed away on Friday evening, December 27, 2019 in Stein Hospice Care Center after a lengthy illness.

She was born on July 27, 1948 in Winston-Salem, N.C. to the late Elliott Stewart and Vernice (Lattimore) Marshall.

A 1966 graduate of Atkins High School in N.C., Verlene, or Ms. Verl, as she was known, attended BGSU Firelands and worked 21 years for Sandusky City Schools.

An active member of Second Baptist Church and multiple area organizations, Ms. Verl was well-known and well-loved. She was a member of, to name a few: National Council of Negro Women, SASSBE, Black Business and Professional Women, Lakeview Chapter #6 5 OES, Sandusky Sub District Baptist Women, Northern Ohio Baptist District Association, Democratic Women, Thursday Evening Jail Ministry, NAACP, IMA Choir, Sandusky Sunday Best, AWA, and was a Mary Kay Consultant.

She won numerous awards and accolades, including, but not limited to: Woman of Inspiration, Providence Hospital Woman of Excellence, Sandusky and Vicinity Ministers Wives and Widows Award, and NOBDA Women's Auxiliary Award.

Verlene leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Kenneth C. Wood; daughters, Michelle Y. Boykin and Kinnetta V. Wilkes, both of Florida, and Monica J. Wood, of Virginia; grandchildren, DeOnte' A. Johnson, Keauna V. Wilkes, Taylor B. Wilkes, Kenneth J. Kelly, Erin S. Wilkes, Kaiden D. Earnest, Kyler M. Earnest, and Kynnedi A. Wood; great-grandchild, Ayvion A. Johnson; sister, Alberta (Abe) Chappell; special family friends Cathelean and Jesse Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Lula Jones, Curtis Marshall, and Carnell Marshall.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2020 in Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky, OH 44870, and again from 11 a.m. on Friday, January 3 until funeral services begin at 12 p.m. in the church. Rev. Reginald Taylor will give the eulogy. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charity. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements.
