Mattie L. Slaughter Winston

Mattie L. Slaughter Winston, 97, formerly of Sandusky, went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, December 30, 2019 in Oak Manor Healthcare Center in Maryland.

She was born on June 30, 1922 in Columbus, MS to Clarence and Maria Weatherspoon.

Mattie confessed the Lord as her savior at an early age: she sang it as a duet with her sister, Hattie B. Harris at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Columbus, MS. She was a member of St. Stephens A.M.E. Church in Sandusky and served faithfully in many capacities, including the Usher Board, Clean-up Committee, and Missionary Board.

Mattie is survived by her children, Ann Slaughter and Nancy Vaughan, both of Laurel, MD, and Willie Slaughter, of Sandusky; grandchildren, Teresa Irby and Deona Powell, both of Sandusky, Kia Vaughan, of Laurel, MD, and Briyon Slaughter, of Sandusky; great-grandchildren, Rylee and Jurnee Powell; cousins, step-children; and a host of family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, John Slaughter and Willie Winston; daughter, Hattie Irby; and sister, Hattie B. Harris.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will begin at 12 p.m. on Friday, January 10 at St. Stephens A.M.E. Church, 312 Neil St., Sandusky. Burial will be in meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mattie's name to her family.
