Raffaele Solvino, who has died aged 93, was a loving and extremely intelligent man of the world.
Raffaele was born July 13, 1926 in Torre del Greco, Naples, Italy, and spoke five languages.
He graduated from the Accademia Italiana della Marina Mercantile in 1948 and served in the Italian Navy. Raffaele spent 25 years traveling the world a chief engineer on large ocean-going passenger ships. After marrying his wife Ginny Solvino (nee Fosco) and immigrating to America he became a United States citizen. He enjoyed a second career as a ship surveyor. With Ginny, he continued to frequently visit Italy and travel throughout the globe. He was an avid fan of soccer, particularly enjoying his hometown team from Napoli. He had many adoring friends spread throughout the world, with whom he communicated with regularly.
Raffaele was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Sandusky Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife Ginny, who he shared 49 years of marriage with; his daughter, Karin Hale; grandchildren, Nash Hale and Morgan Hale Cobb (Macon Cobb); great-grandchild, Clay Cobb and numerous nieces and cousins in Italy.
In addition to his parents, Antonio and Florina (Brunas) he is preceded in death by his three brothers.
The Lord took this great man on January 9th but he will remain in our hearts forever.
Friends may call on Monday, January 13, 2020 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. Father Phil Feltman will officiate. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
