Doris Ellen Speir

Doris Ellen Speir, 93, residing in Sandusky, passed away Saturday evening, January 18, 2020 at Providence Care Center.

Doris was born November 15, 1926 in Bude, MS to the late Francis and Fanny (Newman) Graves.

She graduated in Bude, MS in 1945. She moved north to Sandusky to help family members with their children. Doris was employed by many businesses in the 1940's. After the war, she met the love of her life, Dick Speir, and they will celebrate their 72nd anniversary in heaven together forever.

After the war, Doris worked as an operator/instructor at Ohio Bell. Once her children were born, she went to work for Perkins schools in the high school cafeteria. She was an excellent cook and baker. Doris got promoted to Meadowlawn Elementary as the head cook and worked there until she retired. Doris was a Camp Fire Leader, a member of Bells and Beaus Squaredance Club, and one of the original members of the Vacationland Campers in Castalia. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and was an officer in the Ruth Circle.

Doris and Dick were avid campers, traveling to a majority of the states, and enjoyed living in Florida in the winters. Doris did beautiful needlework and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. While in Florida, she learned pine needle weaving, and made beautiful baskets. Due to Glaucoma, Doris lost her eyesight and it ended her being able enjoy her hobbies.

Doris is survived by daughter, Linda L. (Charles) Myers of Sandusky; son, Richard C. (Debra) Speir of KY; grandchildren, Richard Speir III of KY Charles H. (Amy) Myers of Castalis and Laureen Gilliam of Sandusky; great-grandchildren, Austin, Gabe and Evan Gilliam and Connor Myers; brother, Don Graves of Sandusky; special little dog and best friend, Rascal and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Richard; sisters, Ellen Garner, Ann Hill and Patricia Gibson; brothers, Kenneth and Clarence Graves and one niece and nephew.

Friends may call on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 10:00 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Pastor Bill Schroeder of St. Paul Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
