Gurdon F. Bores, 95, of Monroeville passed away peacefully Friday, January 24, 2020 at his residence.
He was born January 17, 1925, in the little country home south of Norwalk on the corner of the west side of Route 61 and the south side of Settlement Road near St. Alphonsus Church, at 3:30 AM, to Alex and Anna (Lawrence) Bores.
He became a catholic at St. Alphonsus parish after his baptism several days later by Fr. Hasenburg and given the name Gurdon Francis Bores. He attended St. Alphonsus School.
Gurdon lived in the Monroeville country farm home for fourteen years, moving to the village of Monroeville and attending Monroeville High School. He joined St. Joseph Church and Holy Name Society in 1939. At this time, church parishioners voted and elected parish council and ushers. He was later elected as president of council for two years and usher for five years.
Gurdon was hired by Mr. Dombart, the owner of J.A. Machine Shop and Force Factor on Jefferson St., Norwalk, at the early age of sixteen and learned the machinist trade. He worked part time and full time, earning .35 cents per hour, while attending school.
Gurdon joined the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving from 1943 beyond June of 1946. He was trained to serve aboard a new amphibious landing assault ship (LSM) built in Houston, TX. It was used for island hopping the Asiatic Pacific Islands. Gurdon served on this ship for over two years. After 54 years, he was awarded a combat action ribbon, other ribbons, six battle stars and five medals from the U.S. Navy for his service as MOMM 2nd Class Navy Petty Officers Rate or Rank.
discharge of the Navy, Gurdon returned to his old job at J.A. Dombart Machine Shop working for Mr. Dombart until he sold the Machine Shop and Force Factory in 1948 to Brooker Brothers of Cleveland. He then worked as a machinist for over seven years in Bellevue, Ohio for the former, National Farm Machinery, Cock-Shutt Farm Machinery of Canada, and The Ohio Cultivator. He worked for over twenty-eight years for the former G.M. New Departure-Hyatt in Sandusky. Gurdon retired after 46 ½ years as a machinist.
Gurdon was a paid life member of the Knights of Columbus 1117, Third Degree, American Legion Post 547, VFW Post 2743, Moose Lodge of Norwalk 1248, USS LSM Association, United States Navy Memorial, and UAW 913.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Marie (Mike) Matta of Delaware, Ohio; grandson, Matthew C. Matta of Miamisburg, Ohio; one brother, Jack (Shirley) Bores of Monroeville; two sisters, Mary (Robert) Craven of Greenwich, Ohio and Patricia (James) Radcliff of Findlay, Ohio; eight godchildren, many nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Gurdon was preceded in death by his wife of 58 ½ years, Lucille A. (Brown) Bores. Gurdon and Lucille, both of Monroeville, were married at St. Joseph Church on August 23, 1947. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Leonard and Hillary Bores; and his parents.
Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM, Wednesday, January 29, 2020 in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, January 30, 2020 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel Street, Monroeville. Fr. Ron Schock will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.
