John B. Farris Jr.

John B. Farris Jr. 68, Sandusky, peacefully transitioned into his new life on Saturday January 25, 2020, in the Firelands Regional Medical Center.

He was born on March 15, 1951 in Mobile, Alabama to the late John B. Sr., and Ella (Hunter) Farris.

John enjoyed family gatherings and being around family, always talking to inspire people.

John was employed by Port Clinton Schools as a physical education/health teacher until he retired. "Coach", as he was affectionately called, loved mentoring and his inspiration touched everyone who knew him.

John was also known as "Mr. Basketball" loved basketball since the 7th grade. His career continued as a stellar basketball player at Sandusky High School, with him receiving numerous awards; 1,057 career total points, the school record of 42 points when SHS played Lorain Admiral King his Jr. year, then John turned around and broke his own record with 45 points when they faced off LAK his senior year; Second time 1st Team All Buckeye, and leading the conference in scoring his Sr. year. Honorable Mention All Ohio his Jr. year; Second Team All Ohio Senior year, he averaged 24 points per game his Jr/Sr years.

After graduation in June 1970, John received a NCAA scholarship to Morehead State University, Morehead, KY., where he became well noted and a standout player, which granted him an invitation to step forward and try for pro. Had he made pro he would have played for the New Jersey Nets. John completed his education by receiving his master's degree in health and physical education. During summer breaks, he also played in a softball league, earning memorable trophies there too.

John accepted Christ into his life and was a member of the Mount Zion Church of God in Christ.

He leaves to celebrate his life, his significant other, Priscilla (Shaw) Farris; daughters, Verina (John) Craddolph and Velissa Farris; son, Jahn (Karen) Farris; his three cherished grandchildren, A'Nya, Alivia and Jhon Farris; sisters; Josephine (Cecil) Roberts, Lillie Brown, Mary (Kenneth) Jones, Ruby (Bobbie) Nesbit, and Jannice Farris; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Benjamin (BJ)Johnson, John Lewis, The Kaman Family, and Curt Williams.

The family would like to thank Portland Place for their kind caring and support.

Friends may call on Friday January 31st, 2020 from 4-8pm in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave, Sandusky. The body will lie in state at 11:00 until time of funeral services at 12 P.M Noon on Saturday in Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St, Sandusky. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
