Charles F. Smith

Charles F. Smith, 88, residing in Sandusky, passed away Tuesday morning, February 18, 2020 at Stein Hospice Care Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born, October 22, 1931 in Sandusky, OH to the late Fred H. and Edna M. (Lauber) Smith.

Charles graduated from St. Mary's Central Catholic High School in 1949. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Infantry. He owned and operated Brown's Cut Rate Drug Store for 10 years. He was employed by George Canalos for 25 years and was a bartender at Log Cabin Restaurant. He also owned and operated Smitty's SALOON from 1983 to 1996. Lastly, he was employed at Wal-Mart as a stocker for 26 years. Charles was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a life member of the AMVETS Post 17 and a member of the Eagles Post 444. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren's sporting events and spending time with his family, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Charles is survived by his wife, Marilyn J. (Windau) Smith, whom he married on November 26, 1955; three daughters, Cheryl Catri of Curtice, OH, Agnes (Bryon) Bauman of Huron and Karen Fredrick of Johnson City, TN; three sons, Timothy (Kristen) of Sandusky, Gary of Georgetown, KY and Jeffrey (Kimberly) Smith of Sandusky; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two on the way; sister, Mary Alice Ruff of Vermilion and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Including his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Terry Smith; grandson, Skylar and two sisters, Margaret Ann Scheller and Betty Jane Gantz.

Friends may call on Saturday, February 22, 2020 from 9:00 am until the time of his Memorial Mass at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. Burial will be held at a later date in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. Father Monte Hoyles will officiate. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
