On February 19, 2020, Gloria Beck was loved into heaven.
Born to Joseph and Irene Wagner on June 7, 1931 in Sandusky, Ohio, Gloria attended the Sandusky schools.
Jokingly referring to herself as a 49er, she graduated
from Sandusky High School in 1949.
Having lived through the Great Depression, Gloria spent many years of her childhood with different relatives in order to ease the financial burden on her parents. She spoke often of packing a lunch and walking for miles with her sister and friends to go swimming at the quarry. Her other childhood memories involved walking on stilts, roller skating, and ice skating at Battery Park. She liked talking about the cars that drove onto the ice and how the kids would jump onto the running boards and slide around on the ice. Gloria loved to read and was a frequent visitor of the local library.
She would recall the 5 cent ice cream cones, and how her grandpa would give her that nickel to buy one. She belonged to an after-school home economics class, but wasn't involved in school activities because she diligently worked after school. One of her favorite jobs was at Meggitt's, a record store where she met the love of her life. She married Jim Beck on March 11, 1950 and shared 69 glorious years of marriage until Jim was called Home on April 18, 2019. They were blessed with nine children, but Gloria would say that God decided to keep infant twins John and Mary.
While raising seven children, Gloria was active as a fire maid, a group of ladies who supported the Monroeville fire fighters with food and drink after major fire calls. She volunteered for the American Red Cross, the American Lung Association and served on the polls for the Board of Elections. She worked as custodian for the Monroeville Post Office for many years and retired from the Clerk's Office after 30 years as a custodian.
She was a dedicated member of the Monroeville United Church of Christ, where she served as a deaconess, a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, and Bible studies. For many years Gloria was involved with the Women's Fellowship, often serving in a leadership role. She later joined The Chapel and attended the Norwalk campus. The deep, personal relationship Gloria had with her Lord and Savior was the focus of her love and life. This was evident in all she did while serving others, and her beautiful, gentle spirit radiated to all who met her.
Gloria's children fondly remember the many, many times they would bring home their friends, and both their parents would welcome them as if they were their own. Their friends often called them Mom and Dad. Gloria became a "Mom" to so many people, taking them under her angel wings and giving them comfort, strength, words of wisdom, and especially love. Gloria LOVED to sing, and even though she couldn't carry a tune she taught her children fun songs that they sang with her up until her last days. Her favorite childhood song was Zip-a-dee-doo-dah. Oh, how her children loved to tease her about her off-key singing, but it didn't stop her from making a joyful noise. Gloria adored her family, and especially loved babysitting her grandchildren.
Those who mourn her absence are her children Julie (Joe) Murawski, Hilliard, Bonnie Beck, Monroeville, Jamie (Peter) Depaola, Coventry, CT., Tom (Mickey) Beck, Norwalk, David (Ann) Beck, Monroeville, Don (Krista) Beck, Bellevue, and Dale Beck, Monroeville; 19 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Jim, her infant twins John and Mary, her great-grandson Oliver Finn Johnson, and siblings Milton Wagner, Joanne Corwin, and Jackie Miricle.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Sunday, February 23, 2020 at The Chapel, 156 South Norwalk Rd., Norwalk. Memorial services will be at The Chapel at 11:30 am Monday, February 24, 2020.
