Mary Alice (Pietschman) Appell

Mary Alice (Pietschman) Appell, 93, of Sandusky, Ohio, passed away Sunday morning March 8, 2020 at Providence Care Center following a lengthy illness.

She was born the 5th daughter of 6 daughters, on October 22, 1926 in Sandusky, OH to the late Frank and Christine (Black) Pietschman.

Mary Alice graduated from Sandusky High School in 1944, where she was a member of the A Cappella Choir. She attended the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing and Health and also Bowling Green State University.

Married and raising a family of four children, she was active in community services. She was a past board member of the Campfire Girls, past board member of the Erie County United Fund, former board member of both the Erie County Red Cross and the Mildred McCrystal Scholarship fund, she also did volunteer work at the hospital and bloodmobile, where one of her favorite past times was knitting hats and baby blankets for cancer patients and newborns. Mary Alice was a past president of the P.E.O Sisterhood Chapter of Sandusky, member of Grace Episcopal Church and lifelong member of the Sandusky Yacht Club.

She was a 4th generation family member, working in the family shoe store, Pietschman Shoes, which was founded in 1865; she retired in 1994 to start smelling the roses. Mary Alice enjoyed spending summers at the Middle Bass Island house, swimming, boating, and out-door life, along with spending time with her family, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary Alice is survived by her daughter, Mary Alice (Don) McKone of Anthem, AZ; three sons, Albert O. Appell III of San Diego, CA, David (Robin) Appell of Sandusky, OH and Bill (Susan) Appell of Powell, OH; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Bickley of Sandusky and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Including her parents, Mary Alice is preceded in death by her great-grandson, Weston Vassallo; sisters, Grace Robertson, Mildred McCrystal, Ruth Steuk and Martha Flippen.

Friends may call on Thursday, March 12, 2020 from 10:00 am until the time of memorial services at 11:00 am at Grace Episcopal Church, 315 Wayne St. Sandusky. Rev. Jan Smith-Wood will officiate. Burial will be held at Oakland Cemetery at a later date. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
