Rita Alice (Smith, Stein) Whitman, 95, residing in Sandusky, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, March 22, 2020 at the Memory Care Unit at The Commons of Providence.
Rita was born August 25, 1924 in Sandusky, OH to the late Norbert and Renata (Keller) Stein.
Rita graduated from Port Clinton High School. She was employed as an office manager at the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce for over 25 years. Rita helped organize the 1963 Miss America parade for Jackie Mayer in Sandusky. She was an avid golfer with her second husband, Lew and was a club champion at Highland Meadows in Toledo.
Rita is survived by her three children, Renata Scott, Kevin Smith, and Gemma (Tom) Link; grandchildren, Matt Scott, Samantha (Scott) Pohorence, Brad (Abbey) Link, Tyler (Julia) Link, and Seth (Tracy) Link; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Rosella) Stein, and her sister-in-law, Jean Stein.
In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her first husband, James Smith; her second husband, Lewis Whitman; two brothers, Don and Paul Stein; son-in-law, Dan Scott and grandson, Eric Scott.
A memorial mass will be held and announced at a later date. Groff Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
