Leslie James Fulop

Leslie James Fulop, 75, residing in Sandusky, Ohio, passed away on Friday morning, May 1, 2020, at the Stein Hospice Care Center with his family by his side.

Les was born in Paris, Texas on July 18, 1944 to his late father Louis J. Fulop and late mother Elizabeth (Ittes) Fulop. Les' father served in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma during the Second World War.

After the war, Les' family returned to Akron, Ohio where Les graduated from Copley High School in 1962. He earned his college degree from Kent State University, where he was an active member of the Army ROTC and a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Les met the love of his life, Lynn Overmyer, on the first day of classes his sophomore year and they dated through college. During one wild weekend in August 1966, Les graduated from Kent and became a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. That same weekend, Les and Lynn were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church and celebrated with a wedding reception at the Sandusky Yacht Club. Les and Lynn were inseparable for the next 54 years.

After a year tour in Vietnam from 1967-1968, Les returned to Sandusky to begin his 33-year career at New Departure-Hyatt/General Motors, working in advertising, marketing, prototype development, cost accounting, and even the engineering model shop. After his retirement from NDH, Les worked as a bank courier for 5th/3rd Bank for the next 8 years.

Les loved the sunshine and warm weather. He and Lynn enjoyed vacationing at their condo in Sarasota, Florida and visiting his family in Southern California. Les was a history buff and avid gardener, possessing a deep knowledge of war documentaries and flowers, bougainvillea being his favorite. Les was particularly fond of listening to music and enjoying a nice glass of wine. He and Lynn visited Napa Valley several times and Les became a huge fan of V. Sattui Winery. Les was also a 50-year member of the Elks Club and a 25-year member of the Sandusky Yacht Club. Les was loved for his dry and warm sense of humor and unwavering dedication to his friends and family. We will miss him tremendously.

Les is survived by his wife, Lynn (Overmyer) Fulop; his first-born son, Christopher Fulop of Sandusky, his second-born son, Todd Fulop and his daughter-in-law, Emily Johnson of Thousand Oaks, California; his grandson, Evan Fulop of Huron; his granddaughter, Emma Fulop Johnson of Thousand Oaks, California and many nieces, nephews and cousins, who he loved dearly.

Les was preceded in death by his brother, Major Charles Thomas Fulop, USAF, due to a jet fighter crash in 1978, his parents, and his in-laws, Verrell Everett and Mary Overmyer.

Les wishes to specifically thank the nurses and staff at the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center at Firelands Regional Medical Center and the Stein Hospice Care Center who provided compassionate care during his journey to his next adventure.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church and announced at a later date. Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.

Those wishing to contribute to Les' memory may do so to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky, Ohio 44870 or to the Stein Hospice Care Center, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
