Darrell E. Hurlburt, 87, resident of Sandusky, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on June 5, 2020.
He was born in Waverly, MO on June 19, 1932 to Homer and Mosolene (Jackson) Hurlburt.
He graduated from Sandusky High School, where he holds the record for the longest kickoff return for a touchdown. Darrell also played basketball and ran track for the Blue Streaks and continued to be a proud supporter of SHS for the rest of his life. After high school, he joined the Navy, where he served for 4 years. He later returned to Sandusky and was employed at Esmond (Ruggle's) Dairy for over 35 years, from which he retired.
He married the love of his life, Margaret Biecheler on July 22, 1966. They were happily married until her passing in 2013. During the prime of his life, he enjoyed spending his time in the garden and painting small crafts. He was a very dedicated Cleveland sports fan and was vastly disappointed that he did not live to see the Browns win a Super Bowl... maybe next year. Most of all, he loved people and he loved his family. Darrell was always in good spirits, willing to chat, and crack jokes. It was nearly impossible not to be his friend.
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents and wife. He is survived by his sons Bill, Scott (Evelyn), John (Kim), and Patrick (Mary Beth), 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and his beloved companion, Darby.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Stein Hospice for the loving care that they provided for Darrell at the end of his life. In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that donations be made to Stein Hospice in memory of Darrell.
Friends may call on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Father Jeff Walker will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute to Darrell's memory may do so to Stein Hospice Services, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.
