Evelyn Elizabeth Mills

Evelyn Elizabeth Mills, 94, passed away June 6 at Dublin Retirement Village in Dublin, Ohio after a brief illness.

She was born July 4, 1925 in Oxford Township, Ohio to the late Frederick Smith, Sr. and Helene (Deutschbein) Smith. Her mother was a native of Dessau, Germany.

Evelyn attended Sandusky schools and graduated from Sandusky High School. She graduated in 1947 as a registered nurse from the Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Sandusky. During her nursing career, she worked more than 20 years at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital in Norwalk, Ohio.

She met her future husband, Clyde P. Mills, at church in Milan, Ohio. They were married Sept. 2, 1950, and raised two sons, Mark and Richard.

Evelyn was an avid flower gardener with a particular fondness for gladioli and irises. A garden club member, she was adept at growing and arranging flowers She regularly provided her flowers for church services. Friends and neighbors long admired her "green thumb" and beautiful garden. After retiring from nursing, she had a "second career" making silk floral arrangements for a decorator store.

Evelyn liked traveling and was a fan of Ohio State football and basketball. She also enjoyed women's basketball and in recent years followed the UConn women's team.

She was a much-loved and active member of Edison Memorial United Methodist Church for nearly 70 years. She served on numerous missions, service and women's committees, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and helped organize bazaars and suppers. Evelyn was quick to make quips and had a smile for everyone she met. A long-time resident of Milan and Norwalk, she moved to assisted living in Dublin in 2018.
She is survived by her sons Mark (Paula) of Dublin, and Richard of Columbus; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde in 1999; her half-brother Alford Smith; brothers Rudolph Smith and Frederick Smith, Jr.; and sister Erica (Smith) Pringle.

Friends may call Sunday, June 14 from 2-5 p.m. at the Groff Funeral Home Milan Chapel, 1 S. Main St., Milan, OH 44846. Attendees will be asked to follow certain safety and social distancing guidelines. Please be prepared for the possibility of waiting outside the funeral home as a limited number of general public will be allowed at a time.

Services will be June 15 at 1.p.m. at Edison Memorial Methodist Church in Milan. Rev. Barbara Stephens-Rich will officiate. Facemasks must be worn to enter the church and social distancing will be practiced inside.
