Gerald "Jerry" J. Zakerski, 83, residing in Norwalk, passed away Tuesday evening, August 11, 2020 at home.
Jerry was born on November 3, 1936 in Detroit, MI to the late John and Mary (Mientkiewicz) Zakerski.
Jerry was a meat cutter in Detroit, before moving to Ohio in 1963, where he retired as an USDA Meat Inspector after many years of service. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He was a U.S Army veteran serving in the Michigan National Guard. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Jerry enjoyed golfing, bowling, going to his cabin in the upper peninsula of Michigan, wintering in Florida, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends. He was always proud of his nationality, Polish American, and also proud to be Michigan State fan his whole life.
Jerry is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Randy) Taylor of Huron; son, Mark (Kelly) Zakerski of Huron; grandchildren, Shelly (James) Stone, Erica (Casey) Proy, Jennifer Wilkins, Michael (Holly) Zakerski, Lindsay Zakerski and Rylie Zakerski; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; long time companion, Mary Giordano and her family; special friends, Gary and Deb Goodsite and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Jerry is preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Marian (Norrie) Zakerski. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the age of 58, and Jerry took care of her at home for the next 18 years until she passed in 2008. He is also preceded by his 2 brothers, Robert and Ralph Zakerski.
Friends may call on Monday, August 17, 2020 from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 145 S. Center St., Milan. Father Francis Mariadas will officiate. Due to State recommendations social distancing and masks will be required. Burial will be held at a later date in Scott Cemetery, Huron.
