Robert (Bob) Grimsbo

Robert (Bob) Grimsbo left the bonds of earth and flew to his eternal home early on a beautiful Sunday morning.

Bob leaves his loving wife of 33 years, Sandusky native, Paulette Smith Grimsbo, extended family and many friends who will miss his jovial spirit, his generosity, and his love. Bob truly never met a person he did not like.

In 1966, after attending Pacific University, Bob began a career in the United States Army, retiring in 1987. Inducted into the U.S. Army Artillery and later trained as a pilot, Bob graduated first in his class and served as a Cobra Helicopter pilot in Vietnam. Shot down three times, he earned three Bronze Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal for Valor. He served all over the U.S. and Germany in various command and staff capacities to include Headquarters, Department of the Army on Army Staff in the Pentagon.

A native of Prineville, Oregon born in 1945, Bob also lived in Mist, Oregon and graduated from Vernonia high school in 1963 where he was an honor student and captain of the football team. Bob grew up on a ranch and was no stranger to hard work. He worked in the mint fields in the summer, and paid for college by salmon fishing in Alaska in the summers. He attended Pacific University before enlisting in the Army; later Bob graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1972. He then graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College with a Masters in Military Science.

After his military career, Bob was employed by Magnavox Government Electronics, Hughes Aircraft, and the Raytheon Corporation installing helicopter simulators worldwide.

In 1998 Bob and Paulette settled permanently back in Sandusky Ohio, where Bob then worked for Computer Sciences Corporation where he commuted monthly to Florida. He retired from CSC in 2014.

An avid fly fisherman, Bob loved his membership at Sunnybrook Trout Club and his seasonal golf membership at Sawmill Creek. He was an excellent cook and loved vegetable gardening. He was a former Rotarian, and member of the Chamber of Commerce. He loved mentoring his grandchildren in both golf and fishing, playing poker, board games and calling Bingo for them either winters in the dining room or summers on the porch.

Bob is survived by his wife and best friend, Paulette; sons, Robert Jr., Joshua and Doug, with whom he shared a special bond, all of Oregon; stepchildren, Jennifer Weske Monroe (Martin Groves) of Texas, John C. Weske (Gina) of Centerville OH and Matthew Bevill (Noelani) of Issaquah, WA; 9 beloved grandchildren, Lauren Weske, Connor Monroe, Brooke (Greg) Lemkuhl, Collin Monroe, Kate Weske, Wyatt Bevill, Jordan Bevill, Andy Weske, Julia Weske; sister, Kay Grimsbo Curtis, and several nieces and nephews.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Catherine (Pierce) Grimsbo and sisters, Rose and Margaret.

Due to Covid-19, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute to Bob's memory may do so to Stein Hospice Services, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870 or to Cleveland Clinic Heart Institute, PO Box 931517, Cleveland, OH 44193 or visit their website.
