Ralph D. Sloan Sr., better known to some as Poppi, and others as Ralph, and to some as Dad, left us on Monday, September 21, 2020 to be with his true love, Mary Ann Sloan in Heaven. They would be eternally embracing each other and enjoying an Ohio State game on the biggest screen imaginable, while sipping a cocktail and eating mom's cheese ball.
Poppi, as some knew him, will never forget him cheering on his favorite team, Ohio State, or anyone playing Michigan. No matter if it was football or baseball, college or a professional game, dad loved sports and would always sigh when either Ohio State lost a down or a game or the Detroit Tigers would strike out. That was Poppi.
If you would look up the word "Generous" in the dictionary, there would be no surprise if Dad's name and face would come up. He was a generous man with his time as well, helping out St. Mary's school serving French fries and being known as "The Fry Guy" or cheering on Amanda or Michael, his grandchildren, during one of their sporting events during their youth.
Dad's favorite place will forever be remembered as Fort Myers Beach, FL. And he will forever be walking those beaches with mom, who had waited patiently for her "Boo." They vacationed there every winter for a few weeks and become well known as a fun couple who loved life and the sun.
Poppi was born July 13, 1932 and serving in the Navy for approximately 3 years and at one point was a life guard at the officer's club pool, but strangely enough never knew how to swim at that time. Thankfully he never had to save anyone, but surely there was a life preserver close, or if dad had to, he would have jumped in.
Dad left two sons, Ralph Jr., 63 and Stephen Richard, 62, who for the past 2 plus years helped to bring joy to his life while taking care of him during his declining health. Dad liked his ice cream and chocolate, and no matter what time it was or what day it was, when asked if he wanted anything, ice cream was his main answer. He would smile and shine those beautiful blue eyes and melt your heart. He is preceded in death by our beautiful mother, Mary Ann Sloan, who has waited for dad to come "Home" for a while but is now leading him hand in hand down a road to eternal happiness and love. He is also leaving a space in the heart of his 2 grandchildren, Amanda Sloan and Michael Scott Sloan; sisters, Carol Ann (Gene) Laurel and Beanie Smith, as well as countless extended family and friends, including Stephen's fiancée, Carrie "Frannie" Rodd.
We would like to thank Stein Hospice for helping so much during this critical time of dad's care these last few months and would ask that any donations please be made to Stein Hospice Services, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.
