Helen Elizabeth Tommas, 90, of Kimball, OH (near North Monroeville) passed away Sunday morning, January 1, 2012 in the Twolight Gardens Nursing Home, Norwalk, Ohio.
She was born February 26, 1921 on Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie, and was raised in Kimball. She was the daughter of Ralph Walter Tommas and Mary Margaret Messenberg Tommas. A very devout. Lifelong Catholic, Helen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Monroeville and also regularly visited the Sorrowful Mother Shrine, Bellevue.
Helen was a 1939 graduate of Monroeville High School and worked at the old Simplex Radio Corporation, Sandusky, which became Philco Corporation. She was active on the various ladies sports teams of the company and a member of the camera club, bowling league, golf and softball teams at one time or another. She was also active in the Union there, holding the office of secretary, and was on the negotiation and grievance committee. After Philco closed, Helen then worked at the Clevite-Harris in Milan, which became Tenneco. She was also active in the Union there, serving as its treasurer at one point, and retiring in 1986. In her retirement, she kept up her interest in all things, especially politics, sports, and gardening. Helen also enjoyed collecting antiques, and had a good eye for a bargain. She was a loving aunt and filled her time with family, close friends, neighbors and her beloved dogs.

She is survived by her nieces: Pam Ryan, Charlene Tommas, Sonia Boggs, Anna Klontz, Constance Popke, Deborah Laughlin, Dona Tommas, Wendy Dolick, Mary Leber and her nephews: Thomas Lashuay, John Pifer, Robert Pifer, and James Pifer.
She was preceded in death by her four siblings: Rosemary Tommas Pifer of Monroeville, Agnes Tommas Lashuay of Bellevue, Karl Tommas of Castalia, and Ralph Tommas of Sandusky.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville, where the Rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, January 5, 2012 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel Street, Monroeville. The Rev. William Pihfer will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroeville.
