Steve Scott

Steve Scott, beloved husband, father, brother, and son passed away on October 29, 2020, at his summer home, surrounded by family.

Steve was born in Wellston, Ohio and grew up helping out on the family farm and in the family slaughterhouse.

The fortitude and work ethic instilled in him through such labors, helped him forge distinguished high school and collegiate football careers. Steve was a star running back at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, OH, where he was inducted into their athletic hall of fame.
Steve's love for sports and coaching led him to a job in Monroeville, Ohio, shortly after college. This gig ultimately led him to the love of his life, Janice Smith. In order to provide more opportunities for his young family, he left teaching and embarked on a new career with Cooper Tire and Rubber Company in Findlay, Ohio; a career which took Steve and family to Texarkana, Texas, to help get the new plant going. His two-year commitment to the Texarkana plant turned into 50 years in Texarkana! His love of sports continued throughout his life, as he coached his kids' youth football and softball teams and refereed high school football and basketball.

Steve loved his adopted community of Texarkana and was instrumental in the creation of the Kidtopia Park near downtown. He loved fishing, golfing, and watching his grandkids compete in all sports. He spent several years battling colon cancer and dementia; throughout it all, he kept his humor and his ability to give his kids and grandkids a thump on the head when needed! He is missed terribly by his family and friends.

Steve is survived by his loving wife and caregiver of 55 years, Jan, and their 3 children - Jami (Ken) Honigford of Monroeville, OH; Michael Scott of Boulder, CO; and Beth (Glenn) Filla of Tyler, TX; his sister, Sue (Russ) Orkin of Pittsburgh, PA. He is known lovingly as ‘Gramps' by his five grandkids, Paul, Max, Madelyn, Kelsey, and Brady, 2 step-grandkids, Alex and Lindsay, and 6 great-grandkids, Makaila, Austin, Avery, A.J., Jordyn, and Camden.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Helen (Ridge) Scott.

A celebration of life will be held later. Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Monroeville.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870 or a nonprofit of your choice.
