Elizabeth M. Goodwin

Elizabeth M. Goodwin, 99, residing in Sandusky, died Tuesday afternoon, November 24, 2020.

She was born in Sandusky on March 2, 1921 and spent her life as a Sandusky girl, with only one brief move to Monterey, California to be with her husband, Delbert Allen, while he served in the Navy during World War II.

Elizabeth "Betty" was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Del, who died in 1964; her second husband, Lloyd "Bud" Goodwin, who died in 2001; her first-born son, Delbert L. "Buddy" Allen, and sisters, Dorothy Kraus and Ruth Pelz.

She was the daughter of Eleanor McLaughlin, (biological father, Ferdinand Moore), and stepfather, Fred Simon. She graduated from Sandusky High School in 1939.

After Del died, she married widower, Lloyd Goodwin and our families grew together. Surviving are her children, Daniel Allen, Mary Beth (Bonna) Zachary, Rory (Lynn) Allen; stepsons, Daniel (Susan) Goodwin, Scott (Katherine) Goodwin, and Theodore (Margaret) Goodwin; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family was the driving force and the center of the arc of her life. Intensely loyal, she was gracious and generous to family and friends. She consistently demonstrated unconditional love, positivity, and optimism. She was an animal lover, who always had pets at home and welcomed grand kitties, grand puppies, or any other creature that came to visit. In all, she modeled a generous, loving life for her family.

As a young person, she worked at Kresge's in downtown Sandusky, at the beach house at Cedar Point, and later, for Industrial Nut where she met Del. She retired from the Ford Motor Company. During her marriage to Del, they worked together to make a good life for their family, fostered curiosity and adventurousness in the children, and contributed to the community. She met and married Bud while working for Ford after Del's death. Their shared interests included boating, fishing, exploring Lake Erie, camping in their RV, and enjoying the many interests of the expanding family.

Her life was altered significantly when she lost much of her hearing and balance after a surgery. Before that event, she was a social person who belonged to bowling teams, both women's and couples, and card clubs. She was a gracious host and everyone was warmly welcomed into her home. As a life-long member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Sandusky, she attended the parish school, and devoted many years to the church choir and funeral choir. An avid reader, education and reading were important to her, as was music. She loved to go to concerts especially when her children or grandchildren participated in musical enterprises, and was often found at grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sports events. She encouraged us all to test ourselves and help others.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the memorial mass at Sts. Peter & Paul will be private. Burial will follow at Meadow Green Memorial Park. All attendees are required to wear a mask and follow social distance guidelines. Rather than an immediate gathering, a heck of a celebration of her life will be planned for summer 2021. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
