Alpha "Al" H. Ames Jr., 83, residing in Milan, died Saturday morning, January 16, 2021 at The Willows at Bellevue following a lengthy illness.
Al was born on October 26, 1937 in Wichita, KS to the late Alpha H. and Lucille (Stover) Ames Sr. Al spent his youth in Kansas City and Topeka, KS.
Al's life passion was transportation and he majored in transportation at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. He worked for 40 years in the field. He first position was at Atchinson Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad; he then moved to Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Duluth to work in the maritime industry; his last 25 years were spend working for the US Department of Transportation Maritime Administration for the Great Lakes & Upper Mississippi Region before retiring in 2002 as the regional director. Al was a Veteran of the Army National Guard. Following retirement, he volunteered for Habitat for Humanity as a master gardener. He was also a member of the Ancient Mariners and the Sandusky Marine Museum.
Al is survived by his wife of 43 years, Judith (Normando) Ames; children, Heather (Ames) Brooks of Andersonville, TN and Michael Ames of Crossville, TN; 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in New Orleans. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
