John Raymond Gates passed away suddenly on January 21, 2021.
John was born in Havana, Ohio on March 29, 1952 to the late Raymond and Marie Gates.
He was a 1970 graduate of Attica High School and worked for Commercial Vehicle Group in Norwalk (formerly Mayflower, Motor Panels, Sheller Globe) for forty years before its closing. John was very active working on the family farm, as it was his home away from home. If he wasn't spending time with family, you could always find him there tinkering with projects or tending to his garden.
In his spare time, he was an avid spectator of tractor and car shows. He also enjoyed attending auctions and family genealogy. He loved to go the library and do research with his nieces. John was loved by all and was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Kaye (Laviola) Gates of Norwalk; two sons, Nathan (Lisa Waite) Gates of Bellevue and Nick (Caitlin Woyak) Gates of Madison, Wisconsin; three sisters, Joann (Faydean "Gus") Showalter of Monroeville, Sharon (Gerald) Ruffing of Bellevue, and Beverly (John "Ted") Thurston of Monroeville; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose Daniel, Ruth Carroll, and Marilyn Hanline; one brother in infancy; and two nephews, David Ruffing and Robert Daniel.
Friends may call from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Sunday, January 24, 2021 in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am Monday, January 25, 2021 in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel Street, Monroeville. Father Ronald A. Schock will officiate. Burial will be in St. Sebastian Catholic Cemetery, Bellevue.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
