Harold A. Schafer, 91, of Monroeville, died Sunday morning, January 15, 2012 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky following a brief illness.

He was born July 9, 1920 in Monroeville and was a life long farmer. Harold was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Norwalk, the Knights of Columbus, served for 16 years as a Ridgefield Township Trustee, a member of the Huron River Joint Fire District, where he was a founding member and was a director of the Monroeville Co-Op. He also enjoyed and was an avid hunter.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, the former Joyce Meyer Keller, eight children: Sharon (Jim) Turner of Vancouver, British of Columbia, Canada, Bob (Sharon) Schafer of Monroeville, Diane Schafer of Fresno, CA., Don (Susan) Schafer of Crestline, Denny (Ann) Schafer, Dave (Barb) Schafer, both of Norwalk, Dick (Carol) Schafer of Springfield, OH., and Jerry Schafer of Monroeville, 24 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, two sisters: Sister Bernadette Schafer, Sisters of Notre Dame, Mary Lippert of Mayfield Heights, OH., one brother: George Schafer of Arizona, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his first wife: Marjorie (Stang) Schafer in 1996, after 52 years of marriage, his parents: Alfred & Eleanor (Meyer) Schafer, three sisters: Sister Eleanor Schafer, Rita Schafer and Dorothy Gates Missig, and one brother: Bernard Schafer.

Friends may call Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from 2:00 - 8:00 PM in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville, where the Rosary will be recited at 2:00 PM Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, January 19, 2012 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Settlement Road, Norwalk. The Rev. William Pifher will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroeville.
