Carolyn Sue (Klutey) Spayd, 87, passed away on February 22, 2021, after a brief illness.
Carolyn was born in Sandusky, Ohio to Rev. Emil C. and Helen (Ritz) Klutey.
Carolyn will be remembered by her love and kindness, her integrity and excellence in all she did, and her beauty and grace. Her life was full of love and laughter with family, friends, and her church family. Carolyn and Gary married in 1953 and had an active life full of many family activities, vacations, and gathering of friends. People were a very important part of life.
Carolyn was a member of St. Stephen United Church of Christ since 1953 where she was a long-time member of the Senior Choir. She served on many committees with her beloved church family and volunteered at the church office.
Carolyn is a graduate of Sandusky High School, Class of 1951 being a part of the Sandusky A'Cappella Choir and the Alumni Association. After school she occasionally decorated the store windows of Gail's Women's Store. She was a Girl Scout Leader. As a member of the Sandusky Yacht Club, she served as secretary of the SYC Auxiliary for nine years. Carolyn was a member of the local Chapter of the Public Employees Retirees, Inc. She was a former member of Bogey's Golf League serving as treasure and a member of the Couples Golf League. Carolyn was a member of the Kelleys Island Kazoo Band. She volunteered at Firelands Regional Medical Center Pharmacy for 13 years. She served for many years as secretary for the Board of Managers of Pinewood Condo Association #5.
Carolyn was employed at Hinde and Dauch Paper Company and later worked at Kiddie College. She was co-owner/operator of The Ice Cream Parlor featuring Esmond Ice Cream on Columbus Avenue. Carolyn was a legal secretary for Muehlhauser, Lucal and Pfefferle for 12 years. Then she was the Erie County Commissioners' Clerk for 13 years before retiring in 1998.
Carolyn is survived by her children, Sandra Kilko, Huron, Rev. Carol (Chuck) Fleming, Sun City Center, FL, and Scott Christian Spayd, Delray Beach, FL, granddaughters, Heather Carolyn Kilko, Huron, and Brooklyn Virginia Kilko, Huron, great-grandchildren, Isabella Kilko, Bo Gary Walters, and Ellery A. Walters, many nieces, and nephews.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary A. Spayd. They were married for 64 ½ years before Gary passed away in 2017. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Emil C. and Helen (Ritz) Klutey, and her sisters, Miriam Klutey Crosby (S. Leslie), Helen Klutey Cowdrick (Jack), and Virginia Klutey Newton (William).
Arrangements will be handled by Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory. Due to Covid-19, there will be no visitation, funeral, or memorial service. The family will hold a private graveside service and Carolyn will rest in peace in the Mausoleum at Oakland Cemetery.
