Melvin C. Grahl, age 92, of Castalia, died Monday morning, January 16, 2012, at his residence.
He was born March 16, 1919 in Venice, OH and graduated from Margaretta High School in 1936. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Castalia. He was a lifelong resident of Castalia, where he owned and operated Grahl's Sohio, with his wife, for 33 years. He also owned Stokes meat market for eight years. Mel was an original charter member of the Castalia Lions Club, member of the Perseverance Lodge 329, for 58 years, and was on the Board of Directors at the former Castalia Bank.
He is survived by one daughter Jeannette Eggert, CA; three sons Larry (Kaye) Grahl, NJ; Dennis (Valarie) Grahl, Castalia; and Jeffrey (Linda) Grahl, Castalia; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two sisters Viola Liptok, Sandusky; and Inez Renner, Sandusky; brother Frank A. Grahl Jr, Martin; numerous niece and nephews; and special cousin Catherine Korenke.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Christine Grahl; parents Frank and Matilda (Groth) Grahl Sr.; two sisters Evelyn Grahl and Lois Moody; and brother Chester Grahl.
Friends may call from 4-7 PM Thursday at Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, where Perseverance Lodge will conduct services at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Kathleen Suggitt officiating. Burial will be in Castalia Cemetery.
