Norman L. Obermeyer, Sr.

Norman L. Obermeyer, Sr., 90, of Sandusky, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at The Meadows at Osborn Park after a lengthy illness.

He was born on October 2, 1931 in Fremont, Ohio to the late Norman F. and Zita (Puffenberger) Obermeyer.

A 1949 graduate of Fremont Ross High School, Norman's professional music career began earlier, as a sophomore in high school. He was offered the opportunity to join the Charlie Haaser Orchestra and within a few years advanced to become one of the best lead alto saxophone players in the area. He played at Rainbow Garden until its closing in 1959, then continued to play with the same band at various venues. When Haaser retired in 1960, Norman continued the band under the name "The Lee Norman Orchestra." From 1968-1975, Norm was lead alto in the Miss Ohio Band, playing at the Cedar Point Ballroom until its relocation to Mansfield. During this same time, he was active with the musical productions at the Town & Country Theatre in Norwalk.

In 1976, Norman relocated to Florida and spent the next 26 years there. He moved to Sandusky in 2002 and again began to play, this time with the Windjammers Band of Vermilion and Sandusky Community Band. Throughout the years, Norman worked for Ford, was a licensed pilot, flying the Ford Tri-Motor for Island Airlines, and he was also a truck driver for several area companies for many years.

Norman is survived by his son, Norman Obermeyer, Jr., of Norwalk; step-son, Sam (Mary Jo) Artino, of Palm Harbor, FL; grandchildren, Kacey, Kristin, Kyla, Kevin, Paul, Emily, Gail, and Julie; 17 great-grandchildren; niece and nephews, Gail Winter, Jerry Obermeyer, and Richard Obermeyer; and many other loving relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donald; and daughter-in-law, Debra Obermeyer.

At Norman's request, cremation has taken place. Friends and family may call from 3 p.m. on Friday, December 17, 2021 until memorial services begin at 5p.m. at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Pastor Ken Hiser will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Norman's name to the Fremont Ross Music Boosters.
