Walter C. Gray

Walter C. Gray, 89, of Sandusky, passed away after a brief illness on December 31, 2021 at Providence Care Center.

He was born on April 8, 1932 in Waynesville, MO to the late William Clayton and Florence Ida (Phillips) Gray.

He was a 1949 graduate of Waynesville High School, a 1960 graduate of the Missouri School of Mines, and a 1968 graduate of St. Louis University, where he earned his Master's in Engineering.

Walter proudly served in the United States Army from 1952-1954 and was in the Army Reserves until 1958.

As a young teenager he attended a traveling "tent evangelist's" meeting. Given the invitation to accept Jesus Christ, Walter's heart was stirred and he was saved at the altar. A self-taught guitarist, he joined the crusade musicians, playing and singing for the services throughout the community. Walter was faithful in service to the Lord. Over the years he led music, taught Sunday School, served in leadership, and as treasurer. Walter most recently worshipped at Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene.

Walter is survived by his wife, Sandra Kay Mumau-Gray; sons, Wayne C. (Paula), of Sedalia, MO, Wade C. (Monica), of Sandusky, and Jeffery J. (Dani), of Shawnee, KS; and grandchildren, Wesley, Timothy, Lucas, Joel, Halle, Kerrigan, and Savannah.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Elaine (Gouge) Gray, in 2017; and first wife, Charlotte, in 1970.

Friends and family may call on Thursday, January 6, 2022 from 4-7 P.M. at the Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene, 1617 Milan Rd., Sandusky. Funeral services will be on Friday, January 7 at 11 A.M at the church, with Pastor Ryan Brown officiating. Walter will be laid to rest at a later date in his hometown of Waynesville, MO with military honors at the cemetery graveside service.

Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the church.
