Paul R. "Pete" Berger, Sr.

Paul R. "Pete" Berger, Sr., 81, of Sandusky, arrived to his tee time on the Lord's golf course on January 13, 2022 after a 5-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis, complicated recently by pneumonia.

He was born on August 26, 1940 in Norwalk, OH to the late Ralph and Lillian (Holmes) Berger.

Pete was a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a 1961 graduate of Milan High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.

He spent 38 years loading trucks at J.H. Routh Packing Company. During that time, he also worked part-time as an officer for the Erie County Sheriff's auxiliary and Perkins Police Department. Upon retiring he spent over 17 years employed at Woussickett Golf Course where he made new friends and always said it never felt like work. He also found out that he, "Never knew there were so many different ways to grow grass."

His hobbies included playing golf, sitting on the front yard swing and watching the traffic go by while challenging his children and grandchildren to name the color of the next car, and putting together numerous jigsaw puzzles.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy "Annie" (Ebert), who traveled life's road with him for over 60 years after meeting at the Monroeville Skating Rink. Their life's journey brought them three beloved children, Paul (Sarah) Berger, Stephanie Feix, and Bridget (Thomas) Jones. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Paul (Becky) Berger, Alyssa (Andy) Koelsch, Morgan (fiancé Mason) Berger, Bryan Feix, Trent Jones, Miranda Jones; and great-grandchildren, Dorothy "Dottie" and Finnick "Finn" Koelsch; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Along with his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his sisters, Lois (James) McGinn and Nancy (Michael) Graham; brother, Raymond (Joyce) Berger; and son-in-law Matthew Feix.

The kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and all of their friends affectionally called him "Bumpy," which was shortened to "Bump." A special thank you to whoever delivered the Bump sign.

A small, private family funeral will be held. At a later date this spring a memorial will be held at Woussickett Golf Course, where a tree will be planted, some golf played, and stories shared. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (pulmonaryfibrosis.org) or to Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, to help purchase the tree that will be planted in the spring. The family cannot express their gratitude and thanks enough for the care and compassion of the doctors, nurses, and other providers at Firelands Regional Medical Center Intensive Care Unit.
