Thelma I. Cox, 82, Sandusky, departed this life peacefully on Sunday, January 16, 2022, after an extended illness.
She was born in Tunica, Mississippi on August 12, 1939, to the late Ernest and Bertha Hunley.
She was the eldest daughter of seven siblings. She grew up and was educated in Coldwater, MS. In 1959 she met Wrennie "Duke" Cox and fell in love. They relocated to Sandusky, OH and married in 1965. They remained residents of Sandusky where they raised their loving family.
Thelma was a long-time active member of E. Parish St. Church of Christ. She took great joy in dressing in her Sunday's best and attending services. Her work history expanded 44 years. She was an assistant Head Start teacher for several years and went on to work for Scott Paper Co, Displayco and Garret Air Research before becoming employed at Sandusky Athol (formerly Chrysler Plastics). After working 19 years as an inspector at Athol, she retired in 2005. She was a loyal and dedicated employee and received many awards and certificates of accomplishment.
Thelma had a kind heart, loving spirit and infectious laugh. She was blessed with the gift of never meeting a "stranger". She had the ability to make everyone feel special. She found extreme joy in helping others. She was an excellent cook and loved preparing large meals for family and friends. She was very active and kept busy, sewing, quilting, crocheting, cake decorating and traveling.
Thelma leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 57 years, Wrennie "Duke" Cox; children Robert Cox, Donna Wray and Delphine Cox; bonus children, Ethel Turner and Rose Magee; grandchildren, Bryson Cox, Aaron Cox, Jasmine Cox, Robert Cox, Jr. and Donavan Wray; bonus grandchildren, Justin Turner, Porsche Turner, Monique Jefferson and LaTania Rowell; brother, Elijah Hunley; sisters, Easter Howard and Linda Sanders; great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and a host of other loving family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Bertha Hunley, brothers Roosevelt Hunley and Frederick Hunley; sister, Edna Wilson; sister in infancy Dorothy Hunley and bonus daughter, Jan Turner.
A walk through visitation will be held on Monday, January 24, 2022, from 11 A.M. until time of funeral services at 12 P.M. Noon in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The wearing of masks will be required by the family. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
