Lois (Augustus) Pettis

Lois (Augustus) Pettis, 86, Sandusky, entered eternal rest on March 8, 2022, after a lengthy illness.

She was born September 28, 1935, in Harrodsburg, KY, to John and Katie (Bryant) Augustus, relocating to Sandusky in 1945.

She graduated from Sandusky High School in 1954. On June 29, 1957, she became Mrs. Charlie W. Pettis. Over the years she held numerous jobs, including being one of the first African-American telephone operators for Ohio Bell. She retired from General Motors in 1998.

She was a faithful, lifelong member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, serving in many leadership capacities and boards. She was most known around the city as a dedicated member of the Usher Board. Lois was also an active member of the National Council of Negro Women and UAW Local 913 Retirees.

Left to cherish her life and memory is her husband of 64 years, Charlie "Chuck" Pettis; son Michael (Leonora) Pettis, Sandusky; daughters, Gina Pettis, Maumee, and Joan Pettis, Sandusky; grandchildren, Isha, Michael II, Simeron, Jamaal, Shante', Janique, Sharice, Avery; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl Augustus, Jerome(Denise) Augustus; brother-in- law Raymond (Patricia) Pettis, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and one great-grandson in infancy.

Friends may call from 10 A.M. until time of funeral services at 12 P.M. Noon on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky. Rev. Clayton Howard will officiate and burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870 or Cancer Services of Erie County, 505 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870.
