Patricia Helen (Sommer) Oberer Matter

Patricia Helen (Sommer) Oberer Matter, residing in Sandusky, passed away early afternoon, April 12, 2022 at Providence Care Center following a long battle with dementia. Patricia was a respected mother, loyal church member, and computer programmer throughout her life. She was an avid "Ohio State Buckeye", loved nature and gardening, and served in many community and professional organizations.

Patricia was born on October 15, 1937 in Youngstown to the late Karl Calvin "Cal" and Helen Marietta Sommer. She graduated from South High School in Youngstown, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She later graduated from the Ohio State University with the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. In college, she was a member and treasurer of Phi Mu Fraternity. Throughout her life, she was a passionate supporter of her beloved alma mater.

Following college, Patricia married and raised four children. She began her career as a bank teller in Columbus. She served as a bookkeeper for several organizations before embarking on her computer career, where she started as a comptroller and data processing manager and later served in programming and systems engineer positions.

Patricia was very active in religious life, as a church member, deacon, and moderator of Presbyterian Women. She joined the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown in her youth, and joined a new church family wherever she lived, including the East Sparta United Methodist Church (East Sparta), Calvary Presbyterian Church (Canton), First Presbyterian Church (Kernersville, NC), Highland Presbyterian Church (Winston-Salem, NC), and First Presbyterian Church (Norwalk).

Patricia is preceded in death by her first husband, Daniel Lee Oberer, MD; second husband, David Matter; parents, Helen M. and K. Calvin Sommer, and sisters, Joan Codding and Virginia Robertson.

She is survived by her children, Linda J. Ratcliffe of Hammondsville, Karl L. (Jill) Oberer, DO of Sandusky, Frederick W. (Nancy) Oberer of Frederick, MD, and Karen E. (Bernd) Haneke of Arvada, CO; grandchildren, Russell Ratcliffe, Kathryn L. Oberer, Daniel J. Oberer, DPT, Elizabeth Oberer, Megan E. Oberer, Jessica Oberer, Ian H. Haneke and Laura E. Haneke; sister, Ruth E. Miller and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 am on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church, 21 Firelands Blvd., Norwalk, Ohio 44857. Funeral services begin at 11 am at the same location. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron, Ohio. The Groff Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
