Anthony "Tony" S. Aiello

Anthony "Tony" S. Aiello, age 90, of Norwalk, passed away Friday evening, February 24, 2012 at Gaymont Nursing Center surrounded by his family.

He was born April 28, 1921 in Monongahela, PA to the late Peter and Mary (Vacarro) Aiello. He was a 1940 graduate of Brookfield High School and Youngstown State University in 1946 with a degree in education where he was also inducted into the Hall of Fame for Football in 1995. He boxed Golden Glove, semi-pro baseball and professional football for the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a licensed official for Football, Basketball, Baseball and Softball for over 50 years.

He taught for 35 years, starting at Norwalk High School, coached at Steuben, Perkins, Wakeman and Brookfield High Schools. Lastly, he retired as a teacher and coach for 21 years for Vermillion Schools, retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 626, Moose Lodge and former Sandusky I.A.B. Club. He was a former member of Officiating Ohio High School Athletic Association and City of Norwalk Tree Board. He enjoyed playing golf, working in his garden and helping his children with their gardens. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and his great-grandchild.

He is survived by his children, Toni Lee (Robert) Brutsche of Norwalk, Kathleen (Thomas) Henley of Sandusky and John J. Aiello of Norwalk; grandchildren, Amy (Timothy) Phillips of Norwalk and Greg Brutsche of Toledo, Zachary (Katrina) Richards of Raleigh, NC and Marie Henley of Sandusky, Bethany Aiello of Norwalk and Chelsea Aiello of Toledo; great-grandchildren, Madison, Mitchel and Malone Phillips, Zane and Ethan Richards; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie C. (Zakan) Aiello, April 25, 2000; sisters, Nellie, Angelina, Rose and Jenny; a brother Frank in infancy, Frank, Dominic and Joe.

Friends may call on Monday from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main Street, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main Street, Norwalk. The Rev. Frank Kehres, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery.
