Malcolm Leroy  Cheek

Malcolm Leroy Cheek, 72, of Sandusky died Wednesday morning, March 7, 2012 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky following a brief illness.

He was born October 27, 1939 in Chesapeake, Ohio and was a 1956 graduate of Margaretta High School. Mr. Cheek then moved to San Diego, CA. where he lived for 42 years. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years as a Chief Sonarman. He also taught school, was a proof reader and wrote technical books. In November 2007, he moved back to the Sandusky area to be with his extended family. He had a good time with all of the family over the past 5 years, with pizza on Fridays with cousins and other family members. He also enjoyed the family parties and card games.

He was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church, Imperial Beach, CA. for 40 years, where he taught Sunday School for more than 20 years. Since returning to the Sandusky area, he has been a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Route 250, Sandusky. His hobbies included model railroads and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Maryella Berkey, daughter: Kelly (Arthur) Forral of San Antonio, TX., son: Charles (Gail) Cheek of San Diego, CA., two grandsons: Christopher Forral of San Diego and Ryan Forral of Arlington, TX., two sisters: Betty Vidito of Ga., and Doris Wilhelm of Sandusky, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Linda Marie Cheek, his parents: Richard & Louella (Snell) Cheek and one brother: Charles E. Cheek.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until time of memorial service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 10, 2012 in the St. John Lutheran Church, 106 Scheid Road, Sandusky. The Rev. William Hlavin will officiate. At Mr. Cheek's request, burial will be at sea.
