Joan A. Rothermel, A.W.S., D.F., 82, of Sandusky died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, March 17, 2012 at her residence.
She was born March 10, 1930 in Fort Banks, Massachusetts and grew up in the New England states, and moved to the greater Sandusky area about 40 years ago. She was a graduate of Bethany College, West Virginia and received her Bachelor of Fine Art and Masters degree at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Joan was a watercolor artist, known throughout the world. Some of her major exhibitions included: American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America, Watercolor U.S.A., National Academy of Design, Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition, Knickerbocker Artists, National Arts Club, Ohio Watercolor Society, San Diego Watercolor Society, Georgia Watercolor Society, Kentucky Watercolor Society, "The Seasoned Eye" (Modern Maturity magazine)
and was one of 29 watercolor artist chosen to represent the United States in China. She was a member of American Watercolor Society (Dophin Fellow, which comprises an honored sub-grouping of American Watercolor Society members who have acquired a certain number of points through awards in AWS annual exhibits. There are only about 60 Dophin Fellows nationwide.), National Watercolor Society, Watercolor U.S.A. Honor Society, Allied Artists of America, Knickerbocker Artists, The Salmagundi Club, Midwest Watercolor Society, and the Ohio Watercolor Society.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years: Harold C. Rothermel, M.D. (Retired), one daughter: Lynn Schoenfield, M.D. of Cleveland, Ohio, two sons: Chris (Julia) Rothermel of West Carrollton, Ohio and Lawrence Rothermel of Branford, Connecticut, eight grandchildren: Tabatha, Damian, Chad, Bryon, Andrew, Sara, Miriam, and Yosef, 12 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, three nieces and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her father: Major Mark B. Ashley, mother: Anne A. Carrington, and one brother: Mark Ashley.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 22, 2012 in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Burial will take place later in Artrim, New Hampshire.
