Kathleen E. (Katie) Shelley passed away peacefully on December 28, 2022, at the Willows of Willard with family by her bedside. She battled for several years with Parkinson and dementia.
She was born July 7, 1933 in Bellevue, the daughter of Laura and Howard Heyman.
She lived her whole life in Bellevue except for wintering in Arizona for 20 years. She graduated from Bellevue High School and worked as a bank teller and at General Electric in Bellevue before becoming a stay-at-home Mom and raising her family. Katie married the love of her life, Alvin Shelley, on August 22, 1953. They had 67 years together before he passed away in May of 2021. Her parents and a brother also preceded her in death.
Katie was a very dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved traveling and visits from her family and friends. She was raised on a farm, so it came natural to be Alvin's right hand (wo)man when they bought and moved to her parent's farm in 1970. She was an avid gardener and a great cook and baker. Especially known for her homemade holiday peanut brittle (which she learned to make from her aunt, in an iron skillet. Few have mastered this). Also, her homemade eggnog (For Tom and Jerry's) and yeast dinner rolls and coffee cake were always a hit. Her grown grandkids looked forward to receiving homemade canned spaghetti sauce, "bread and butter" pickles and dill pickles and peaches or pears as part of their Christmas gifts. Because she was always a hard worker, as part of her farewell after family visits, she became famous for saying "Don't work too hard!"
Katie attended Hunts Corners United Church of Christ most of her life where she was organist for many years. She and Alvin later joined Congregational Community UCC in Monroeville. She enjoyed her euchre and pinochle clubs and playing dominoes. She bowled for many years in leagues at Jolly Lanes. She and her family and friends enjoyed many good times at their cabin in Pennsylvania and in Sun City, AZ in retirement.
Katie is survived by her children, Jaci (John) Schaber of Mansfield, Judy (David) Lepley of Bellevue, and Jeff (Deb) Shelley of Willard; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of a life well lived will be held on January 28, 2023 at Congregation Community UCC of Monroeville, 29 Chapel Street, Monroeville, Ohio. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with Pastor Wayne Chasney officiating a funeral service at 11 a.m.
Katie's family would like to thank the Willows at Willard, Stein Hospice, and Foos & Foos Funeral Service for their care. A special thank you to her granddaughter, Kendra Shelley (an employee of the Willows). She always looked out for her grandma and was happy to do it. And many thanks to her daughter in law, Deb Shelley (also an employee of the Willows). Deb and Kendra got us all through the Covid crisis and restrictions when we were unable to visit.
Memorial contributions may be made in Katie's memory to Congregation Community UCC of Monroeville, 29 Chapel Street, Monroeville, Ohio or Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
