Lawrence "Larry" (John) DeWitt, 79, of Bellevue passed away Friday, January 13, 2023 at The Bellevue Hospital.
He was born August 4, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio the son of Loyal John DeWitt and Mardella Elaine (Bates) Jacobs.
Larry served in the United States Navy for 4 years, from 1959-1963. He was hired at the Ford Plant and worked there from 1964-1968 and was then married to Judy Mae (Matz) DeWitt in 1965. He was on a rescue team during the 1969 flood and was responsible for saving lives and getting crucial medicines and supplies to stranded people. He served on the Bellevue Fire Department from 1968-1972 and was an honored Class "A" Fireman. He owned and operated his own commercial vehicle for several years and was successfully employed as a commercial driver for decades to his retirement.
Larry is survived by his daughters: Tonya (DeWitt) Schaffer-Root, Tamara (DeWitt) Mariea, and Tina (DeWitt) Turner; three sons: Todd DeWitt, Thomas DeWitt, and Troy DeWitt; 13 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a brother, Michael Jacobs; and sisters, Deanna Stimson and Jennifer Jacobs-Buza.
Larry is preceded in death by his father, Loyal John DeWitt; mother Mardella Elaine Jacobs; stepfather, Bernell Jacobs; granddaughter, Chloe Noelle Mariea; son-in-law, Christopher Turner; and nephew, Gregory Jacobs.
A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 209 Southwest Street, Bellevue. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Jacob Cemetery, CR 38, Republic.
