Ethel Mae Hicks-Young, 87, of Berlin Heights, Ohio, passed peacefully from this life to the next on January 18, 2023, at home.
She was born on August 25, 1935, in Louisa, Kentucky, to the late Elbert and Lida (Wallace) Castle.
Ethel was a devout Cleveland Indians fan who simply loved the game of baseball. She was an excellent cook and was renowned for her buttermilk biscuits, which often drew much interest, and high bids at church auctions. She enjoyed gospel music, going to church and watching Ohio State football games.
She is survived by her husband of nearly nine years, Herman Young of Berlin Heights; children, Donald (Janice) Hicks of Elberta, AL, Jeanette (Troy) Shepherd of Willard, OH and Lisa (Rolland) Bovia of Norwalk; stepchildren, Cheryl (Terry) Hall, Ronnie Young, Linda Hunter, Connie (Robbie) Ray, Herman (Cindy) Young III, and Becky Young; sisters, Rachel Summers, Alleen Dillman, Peggy Castle and Donna Castle; grandchildren, Chad (Rachele) Robles, Stacy (Jamie) Hardin, Amanda Griggs, Shane, Bryan, and Marcia Laney, Adam Shepherd, Courtney (Pierce) Crabtree, Jeremy (Angela) Sullivan, and Kevin (Sunny) Sullivan; she is also survived by numerous great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband, Rev. Carl Hicks; daughter, Dianne Robles; siblings, Opal Pierce, Joyce VanHorn, Harold Castle, Earl Castle, Roy "Buck" Castle, and George Castle; stepson, Darryl Young; and grandsons, Sean and Brad Robles, and Drew Rush.
Friends and family members are invited to her visitation on Monday, January 23, 2023, at Mt. Harvest Church of God, 150 State Rte. 113 W., Milan, OH 44846, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again at the church on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service, which will begin at 12 p.m. (noon) with Pastor Jack Kiskaden officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, in Berlin Heights.
