Polly Walters, 86, of Sandusky died morning, April 9, 2012 under the care of Stein Hospice Service in the Erie County Care Facility following a brief illness.
She was born January 19, 1926 in Bulam, Kentucky. Polly left home in 1943 at the age of 17 to work in a munitions plant in North Judson, Indiana. She married in 1946 and moved to Sandusky in 1948. She was a stay at home mother until 1958, when she went to work at Hinde & Dauch, which eventually became Chesapeake Display and Packaging. She retired in 1991. Retirement gave her opportunities to volunteer at the Victory Kitchen, the Senior Center and Care and Share. Polly loved to travel, having visited 49 of the 50 states. She made many hand-stitched quilts and knitted afghans. She had a passion for her gardens. Polly had been a founding member of the Faith Memorial Church, where she had been a member for over 50 years.
She is survived by her children: Ferndale (Bud) Sonick, Carolyn Deitenbeck, both of Sandusky, Sandra (Bill) Schaefer of Monroeville, Larry (Donna) Walters of St. Louis, Missouri, one son-in-law: Mario Zeleniakas of Cleveland, eight grandchildren: Phillip Walters of Cleveland, Peter Deitenbeck of Sandusky, Newt Schaefer of Chicago, Il., Nathan Schaefer of New York City, N.Y., Jackson Schaefer of Monroeville, Mason & Owen Zeleniakas of Cleveland, Emily Knauer of Sandusky, seven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, two brothers: Earl (Sylvia) Clemons of Ary, Ky., Luther (Lillie Ruth) Clemons of Goldsboro, N.C., one sister: Pauline Boggs of Monticello, Ky., nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband; Dennis Walters in 1963, one daughter: Lisa Zeleniakas, her parents: Carl & Vina (Marshall) Clemons, and five brothers: Arthur, Will, Mervin, Jesse and Grover Clemons.
Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 pm Friday, April 13, 2012 in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, April 14, 2012. The Rev. Kenneth Hiser will officiate.
Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Condolences may be shared with the family at pfeilfuneralhome.com.
