James H. Irby

James H. Irby, 88, of Sandusky, passed away Monday, June 12, 2023 at Providence Care Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born April 9, 1935 in Sandusky to Pink and Mary (Sanders) Irby.

Also known as "Big Jim," he was a Sandusky High School football prep star who later went to Michigan State University. Jim moved to Washington D.C. where he worked for the United States Government and ran a intellectual magazine called "Imminence!" In retirement, James made his name known around the area as an avid golfer and bowler.

James is survived by his sister, Leola Bailey; daughters, Sharon Irby, of Columbus, and Venus Renee Robinson, of Toledo; son, Jeffrey (Jeanelle) Brady, of Cypress, CA; grandchildren, Nelson Brewer and Jamaal (Susan) Brewer, both of Columbus, OH, and Joshua Brady and Jordin Brady, both of Cypress, CA; special nephew, Artie Castile, of Sandusky; and good friends, Randy Moore, of Sandusky, and Ramon "Tony" Wigfall, of Capitol Hts., Maryland; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sisters, Corrine Castile, Ernestine Irby, and Irene Terrell; and brothers, Samuel T. Irby, Emmanuel Irby, and Ozell Irby.

Friends may call on Tuesday, June 20 from 11 A.M. until funeral services begin at 12 P.M. at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The service will be live streamed for those who cannot attend in person: https://webcast.funeralvue.com/events/viewer/89433

Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Army Honor Detail.
