Mary K. Schlessman, 72, residing in Huron, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 18, 2023 at Stein Hospice Care Center following a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mary K. was born on August 22, 1950 in Bellevue, OH to the late Rodger Ambrose and Irene May (Griffin) Gerhardstein.
Mary K. graduated from the last graduating class of York High School in Bellevue, OH in 1967. She then received her Associates Degree from Tiffin University. Mary K. worked in banking for over 35 years, retiring in 2010 as the Vice President of Castalia Bank. She served her community by being the first female Huron Township Trustee, a position she currently held, and by being a member of the Huron Township Zoning Board for 25 years. Mary K. was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she was the past President of the church, and also served on the board of the AGAPE House.
Mary K. was a farm girl at heart, loved farming with her husband, and always enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers. She was a proud mom, grandma and great-grandma, and an amazing wife to David for over 35 years. Mary K. loved being with family, and was always up for a party and dancing, especially to celebrate the holidays and spoiling others on their birthdays and for Christmas. She would make sure the kids had the best Easter egg hunts, and everyone had their fill of her amazing applesauce! Mary K. was also a world traveler, having visited six out of seven continents and all 50 states throughout her lifetime.
Mary K. is survived by her husband, David Schlessman, whom she married on December 1, 1987; children, Scott (Melissa) Schlessman, Matt (Lauren) Alderman, Andrew (Kathy) Manbeck; eight grandchildren, Rebekah, Michael, Renee, Jaylee, Kyle, Brenden, Steven and Emma; great-grandson, Leo; four sisters, Linda Oatley, Diane (Bruce) Yingling, Toni (Chris) Walters, and Laura (Jim) Tebeau; two brothers, Thom (Jackie) Gerhardstein and Sam (Dorothy) Gerhardstein; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to her parents, Mary K. is preceded in death by her son, Michael Schlessman; sister, Liz Young; brother, Rodger Gerhardstein; and mother-in-law, Bernieta Schlessman.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023 with services starting at 6:00 PM at the family home in Huron. Burial will take place at a later date in Scott Cemetery, Huron, OH.
