Alton E. "Al" Frisch, 90, of Marysville, Ohio, died on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Scott Anderson, where he had been living under the care of Loving Care Hospice since March of 2023. He was born on April 16, 1933, in Bellevue, Ohio, the middle son of Albert J. and Irene (Moyer) Frisch. Alton was one of six children (three daughters and three sons), with whom he enjoyed life-long, loving relationships.
Al was a 1951 graduate of Bellevue High School, where he was a member of the high school band. His lifelong love of music began in the band room of Bellevue High School, where he became a gifted trombone player who enjoyed performing in various groups and small ensembles, often performing at talent shows and school assemblies. A natural leader, Al was active in student council and various other organizations, all the while holding down after-school jobs such as delivering papers and working at Bill's Market.
After graduation, Al chose to serve his country in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War, where he achieved the rank of Boatswains Mate, Second Class. He served aboard the Coast Guard cutter, General Greene, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Part of Al's service included search and rescue missions in the Atlantic for ships lost and adrift in all types of weather.
After his service to his country, Al returned to Bellevue and began working at the former GE Lamp Plant in Bellevue. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Caryl Lee Snyder, also of Bellevue. The couple were married on July 11, 1959, at the Sorrowful Mother Shrine outside of Bellevue, by Fr. Joseph Lapinski. Al and Caryl set up housekeeping in Bellevue and soon began their family. In 1961, Al took a job as a driver with a new employer in the area, United Parcel Service, which operated out of a small center in Clyde. Al would work for UPS until his retirement in 1990. Ever the hard worker, Al was a dedicated UPS employee, steadily working his way "up the ladder" into management positions, covering a range of different job experiences within the company. Al's work ethic frequently moved him past men with far more education and experience. Al was sent by the company to wide-ranging places such as Sandusky, Toledo, and Columbus, Ohio, Raleigh, N. Carolina, and even West Germany to train others in the "UPS Way". Al's three-month stint in West Germany during 1977 was especially memorable, as he even got to cross into Communist E. Germany to experience a day or so behind the Berlin Wall.
After retirement, Al and Caryl moved to Florida permanently and began living their life's dream of living in the sun, as well as traveling. Over the next 21 years, they purchased a series of motor coaches in order to travel through most of the lower 48 states, as well as several provinces in Canada. Frequent traveling companions were Al's sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Jim Jensen. Al and Caryl also belonged to several motor coach associations, and they would ‘rally' with other members all over the country, making friends wherever they went. Eventually returning to Ohio in 2012, they settled back in Columbus, where most of their family was located. Al enjoyed puttering around the house, working in the yard, caring for his cars and reading once the traveling days were behind him. An avid OSU fan, Al enjoyed rooting for his Buckeyes, no matter the sport or the outcome.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Caryl (Snyder) Frisch, Marysville, OH and five daughters: Lori (Robert Jr.) Luderman of Defiance, OH; Susan (Scott) Anderson of Marysville, OH; Jacalyn (Anthony) DiSante of Upper Arlington, OH; Judy Frisch of Delaware, OH; and Beth (Mark) Murphy of Blacklick, OH. Sixteen grandchildren also survive their grandfather, as well as 17 great-grandchildren, with one more expected to join the family this fall. Al is also survived by one brother, M. Eugene (Norma) Frisch, of Ocala, FL, as well as two sisters-in-law, Christine Linder and Joan Snyder, and brother-in-law, Alan Snyder, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Irene Frisch, his sisters and their spouses: Edna (Walter ) Wise, Dorothy (James) Jensen, and Bernita (Leland) Bowers, and one brother and his spouse, Charles A. (Norma Jean) Frisch. Also preceding him in death were two sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Snyder) Robertson, and Janet (Lepley) Snyder, and two brothers-in-law, Walter Robertson and R. William Snyder, two nieces, Karen Comiskey and Lisa (Robertson) Mullet, and four nephews, James Robertson, Scott Bowers, Donald Wise and Dennis Bowers, in infancy.
To sum up a life well-lived is a difficult task, but Al Frisch was blessed with 90 pretty wonderful years. As age and illness became part of his life of late, he was patient and loving - always worrying that Caryl was all right and taken care of first. However, he was also a perfectionist in everything he did; Al often had difficulty accepting that others had a hard time rising to his level of expectations. Many jobs at home had to be re-done until they were done "Dad's Way", but those re-do's taught his daughters a lot of important life lessons. Al was a "Girls' Dad" way ahead of his time; he taught his daughters to be self-reliant and independent - teaching them how to care for their cars, lawns and homes as well as any man could. Al personified the character traits of honesty, integrity, honor, and most importantly, love of God and family. Dad was not a perfect man, but he was perfect enough for us. We will love you forever and we'll all see you again.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, from 4-7 p.m. at Foos & Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue where the Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church, 231 E. Center Street, Bellevue. Military Honors will be rendered at the conclusion of Mass.
