Gary L. Davenport, Sr., 77, of rural Fremont, died at his home on Thursday, July 27, 2023.
Gary, born on August 5, 1945, was the oldest son born to Velda (Hackenburg) and John Davenport. He was a member of the 1963 graduating class of the former York High School.
After 35 years at the Whirlpool Corp as a tool & die maker, he retired. Gary was a member of the fire brigade and the ambulance while at Whirlpool. Not one to be still for long, he was able to help in the restoration of the Whirlpool Fire Tractor.
Gary then was able to devote much of his time to his favored occupation, farming.
Mr. Davenport liked to be involved with tractor pulls, being a 4-H advisor for 30 years, camping, deer hunting and being with his beloved family. He enjoyed attending the grandchildren functions from fair to sports.
He was a kind personable man who loved his family deeply.
On August 14, 1965, he married Penny Gilbert. She, along with their four children, Gary, Jr. (Deb) Davenport of Clyde; Julie (Jon) Kuehne of Green Springs; Mark (Clara) Davenport of Fremont and Tonya (Derek) Gerstenberger of Fremont. Eleven grandchildren, Walker, Tanner; Joshua, Jacob; Austin, Chase, Dakota, Ethan; Blake, Kadyn and Brooklyn also survive, as do three great grandchildren, Liam, Cora, and Harper. Two brothers, Darl (Deb) Davenport of Clyde and Randy (Theresa) Davenport of Green Springs.
In addition to his parents, one brother, Dennis Davenport is deceased.
Visitation will be on Monday, July 31, 2023 from 2:00 pm -7:00 pm at Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, 218 South Main St., Clyde. The funeral will be on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 10:30 am at Grace Community Church, Fremont. Burial will be in Bakertown Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Grace Community Church or Clyde FFA, or Heartland Promedica Hospice.
