Elwanda Lee Norton, 94, of Sandusky, OH, departed her earthly life the same way she lived it, on her own terms, in the early morning hours of August 2, 2023.
Born September 12, 1928 in Spencer, WV, the daughter of the late Ulysses Grant Coon and Eupha (Shepperd) Coon. She was the 5th of 10 children. She was a loving mother and beloved grandmother. Her family was always important to her.
Elwanda was in many ways a trend setter. She attended Spencer High School, leaving the hollows of WV in 1949 and enlisting in the United States Air Force. Serving stateside, her enlistment was extended during the Korean War. She was always proud of her service to her country.
Elwanda was many things in her life. She worked in Civil Service, working at the Commissary and PX at Fort Ord in CA, and the Commissary at Fort Sill in OK, where she retired from Civil Service. She attended Cameron University in Lawton, OK and obtained her real estate license. She was a businesswoman. She started and ran a small antique shop for many years in Lawton.
Elwanda was a passionate yard seller, enjoying many weekends with her grandchildren at the flea markets and looking for good yard sales. She was an avid traveler. When her family was spread to the far corners of the continent, she always made the effort to see them and bring everyone together. Elwanda did many things in her life, but she will be remembered as our Mother and Grandmother. She will be missed.
Elwanda is survived by her four children, James Norton III, Kathleen Lee Norton, Daniel Norton, and David "Randy" Norton; grandchildren, James Norton IV, Beth Anne Florey, Elizabeth Doidge, Erik Norton, and Jaime Percival; great-grandchildren, Ryan James Ellis, Leighanne Florey, Janice Norton, James Norton V, Ethan Norton, Hailey Doidge, and McKayla Doidge.
In addition to her parents, Elwanda was preceded in death by her siblings, Glada Coon, Ora Jane Petrigo, Geneva Starcher, Orland Grant Coon, Fleetice Martin, Steven Coon, Quellen Coon, Iverson Coon, Ewell Coon, and Garnet McCune; granddaughter, Katie Ruth Percival; and great-granddaughter, Therese Marie Florey.
