Kevin J. "Big Kev" McCarthy, 56, of Sandusky, left this Earth Mon., Sep. 11, 2023 to be reunited wit his loved ones in Heaven.
He was born July 2, 1967 in Sandusky to James and Mary Lou (Lance) McCarthy. Kevin was a lifelong resident of the Sandusky area.
Kevin attended Sandusky High School and had a career in welding at Stein, Sandusky. While employed there, he earned several certificates in welding, lathing, and fabricating. Big Kev was best known for his presence in numerous local bars and nightclubs, where he specialized in security. He took his responsibility seriously and traveled to many locations outside the Sandusky area in this capacity. Anyone visiting The Drink, Brandy's, Bourbon St., or The Underground recognized, knew, and loved Kevin. He dedicated decades of his life securing safe places for locals to socialize.
Kevin was a true car enthusiast, surrounding himself with all things car related. Whether under the hood, installing systems, tinting windows, or driving a prized possession, where there was a fast car, cool car, old car, or junk car, you could find Kevin. For many years Kevin participated in the Erie County Fair's demolition derby. Fittingly, his first love was a 1976 Pontiac Trans Am.
Kevin also had a passion for tattoos. After getting his first tattoo at age 14, he spent his lifetime continually adding ink to his body art.
Big Kev loved people. He had a huge personality to match his stature. His sense of humor was one of his most noteworthy qualities. If Kevin couldn't make you laugh, no one could.
Above all else, Kevin loved his children and grandchildren. Health battles robbed him of spending time with those he loved the most.
Left to keep his memory alive are his son, Joshua (Brianna) McCarthy, of Findlay; daughter, Hilary McCarthy, of Sandusky; seven grandchildren, Jace McCarthy, Amarena McCarthy, Olivia Hernandez, Zaiden, Zachariah, and Zander Rowe, and Samiyah Terrell; two brothers, Dale McCarthy, of Sandusky, and Robert McCarthy, of Virginia Beach; niece, Amber McCarthy; nephew, Brett McCarthy; bonus family, Linda McCarthy, Rex (Melanie) Melson, and Jay (Julie) Melson; lifelong friends, Bobby Aceto, David Biemler, Keith McKinley, Steve Martin, and Brenda Canter; and a multitude of friends that would be impossible to list.
In addition to his parents, Kevin was preceded in death by his son, David Lee, in infancy; and nephew, Dale McCarthy, in 2018.
Cremation will take place. Services will be announced at a later date.
Those wishing to contribute to Kevin's memory may do so to the funeral home to help offset the cost of services.
