Betty Jean (Smith) Simmons, 77, Sandusky, passed away Tuesday evening, September 26, 2023, at Otterbein Monclova after a lengthy illness.
She was born on September 26, 1946, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, to Naomi (Smith) Mickens and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1964. Betty had a tremendous work ethic, was honest to a fault, and loved her children and grandchildren immensely. She was employed at Sears, Scott Paper Company, and Chrysler Automotive, later known as Sandusky Athol. She also volunteered with the Erie County CASA program for a short time. She attended St. Stephen A.M.E Church of Toledo. Betty enjoyed cooking, entertaining, spending time with her grandchildren, and shopping.
To carry on her legacy of love, she leaves three children, Tracy (Gerald) Reed of Columbus, Tonia (Keith) Pace of Toledo, and Charles of Cleveland; seven grandsons: Gordon Williams Jr., Charles Alexander Williams, Keith Pace, Jr., Charles Simmons, Columbus Sheperd III, Kristian Pace, Xavier Simmons and one granddaughter, Nyla Simmons. She leaves four sisters, Irma Smith of New York, Naomi Tyler of Sandusky, Jackie Smith, and Frances Copeland of Greensboro, Georgia, and one brother, Harold Dee Smith of Sandusky. In addition, she leaves numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends and life-long friends Jackie Sallee, Flossie Simmons, and Ella Baker.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Naomi Mickens; step-father, Luke Mickens; brothers, Ezell, Nathaniel (Sanford), and William Jacob Smith; her sister, Marianne (Smith) Goodwin; and her grandson, Noah Simmons.
The family will greet guests from 11:00 A.M. until time of funeral services at 12 P.M. Noon on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Pastor Thomas Fant will officiate. Condolences may be made to the family by visiting toftfuneralhome.com.
