Billy Joe "BJ" Gillespie, 74, of Wakeman, passed away suddenly Monday October 2, 2023 at Firelands Regional Medical Center.
He was born on October 4, 1948 in Pontotoc, Mississippi to Ben and Mallie Mae (Garrison) Gillespie.
BJ graduated from Brookside. He was a veteran of the Navy who proudly served his country from 1967 to 1970. He was employed at US Steel for over 30 years. He was a member of Wakeman Eagles. BJ was also a Cincinnati Bengal's fan. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and spending time on his property after retirement.
Billy is survived by his wife, Darlene, whom he married on June 1, 1969. He is also survived by his daughter; Rochelle (Bob Laws) Gillespie; son, Stacy Gillespie; brothers, Jerry Gillespie and Terry Gillespie; sisters, Diane Farley; Kathy Carver and Gayle Lavon, grandchildren; Jia Cruz, Joseph Cruz and Bailey Gillespie; great-grandchild, Kayden Lapash; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Lamar Gillespie.
Cremation has taken place. At the request of the deceased, there are no public services scheduled at this time.
