Elmer Blakely, Jr., 83, of Sandusky, passed away on Thursday afternoon, June 28, 2012 in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.
He was born on December 22, 1928 in Waynesboro, Mississippi to the late Elmer, Sr. and Mae Ollie (Smith) Blakely.
Elmer came to Sandusky when he was about 18 years old. He worked for the Armour Fertilizer Plant and the Farrell-Cheek Steel Co. He left Sandusky in 1975 to work on the Alaska Pipe Line in Anchorage. He often came back to visit family and friends, and retired to Sandusky after working in Alaska for 25 years.
When Elmer's health started to fail and he could no longer fish and garden, he would sit on the back porch and watch his friend, Fred Rhodes, take care of his back garden. Fred would also bring fish that Elmer could no longer catch. Additionally, Elmer enjoyed the people who would visit him when he was unable to leave home.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Airy B. (Jordan) Blakely, to whom he was married 66 years; daughter, Lessie M. (Earl) McVay, Perrysburg, OH; sisters, Rebecca Gray, Sandusky, Annie Ruth Ramey, Eloise Lowe, and Lena Blakely, all of Boston, Massachusetts, Evonne (R.V.) Henry, Waynesboro, Mississippi, and Omega Tabb, Selma, Alabama; three granddaughters, Angela Rollison, Daphne (Warren) Charley, and Stacey Rollison; and five great-grandchildren, Stephen D. Garrett, Rachard Wilson, Darrick Colbert, De-Angelo Rollison, and Justinee Adams.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Hattie Edwards, Laura Blakely, Mattie Smith; and brother, A.D. Blakely.
Friends may call on Monday, July 9, 2012 from 11 A.M. until time of funeral services at 12 noon at Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 3204 Venice Road, Sandusky, OH 44870. The Rev. Marius E. Martin will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
