Robert William Herner, age 76, of Norwalk, passed away Thursday morning, August 2, 2012 after a brief illness.
He battled with Parkinson's disease for over 20 years and always believed a cure was on the horizon.
He was born October 4, 1935 in Norwalk to the late Ralph and Doris (Fry) Herner. After graduating from Bellevue High School in 1953, he served in the Army from 1957 to 1959 and was stationed the majority of the time in Germany.
Bob worked for over 37 years at Durable Mat Co., Norwalk, Ohio where he started on the production line and worked his way to General Manager.
An avid athlete, Bob's first love was baseball where he always dreamed of playing professionally. Next he turned to softball and became one of the top centerfielders in the area. He was also a very good volleyball, basketball and tennis player.
Bob's positive outlook inspired others He was a mentor, counselor and helped many young individuals start their careers. He also started Scoopers at the Station and Christian Roberts Salon and Spa.
Family was always first in Bob's life, and he adored them all. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janet (Twaddle) of Norwalk; children, Matthew Robert (Lisa) Herner of Norwalk and Suzanne Marie (John) Sopa of Bay Village; grandchildren, Elyse Marie, Hannah Jean, Andrew Robert Jan, and Alaina Grace; brother, John Herner of Monroeville, and sister, Margie (Paul) Brookover, of Wakeman, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held Sunday, August 5, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Crossroads Community Church, 414 Gibbs Road, Norwalk. The Rev. Molly Payne will officiate. Private family burial will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Pontiac Township which was founded by his great grandfather. The family invites friends for dinner, music and card playing at the American Legion Hall, 1544 Us Hwy 20 W, Norwalk beginning at 5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Robert Herner Homerun Fund, c/o Key Bank, 51 East Main St. Norwalk, Ohio. Bob had a passion for life and love of sports. The Robert Herner Homerun Fund provides support to children in order to remove any financial barriers that prevent them from playing sports.
