Helen L. (Henkelman) Steinert, 88, of Sandusky, passed away Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, in Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky.
Helen was born April 4, 1924, in Sandusky, daughter of Wilbert and Leora (Holzaepfel) Henkelman. She was a 1941 graduate of Sandusky High School and received a bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University in 1945.
Her teaching career began at Greenwich High School as a business teacher and continued at Oak Harbor High School. She later substituted and provided instruction for home-bound students for Sandusky City Schools.
Helen always put others' needs before her own. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where over the years she was involved in the Visitation Committee, Women's Group, Newsletter Team, Kitchen Committee, and served as an accompanist for Sunday School. Additionally, she was active in Child Chapter Mother's Club and the Erie County Retired Teachers Association.
Helen is survived by her son, Richard Steinert of Sandusky; daughter, Carol (Ron) Albert, of Sandusky; two grandsons, Daniel (Rachel) Albert of Ithaca, N.Y., David Albert of Columbus; great-grandson, Noah; brother, James (Jackie) Henkelman-Bahn of Silver Springs, Md.; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, in 1993; sister, Dorothy Jarrett; daughter-in-law, Jean "T.J." Steinert.
Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Pfeil Funeral Home, 617 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, and 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, until services at 10 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. John Mawhirter will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
